Josh Jung hit a tiebreaking two-run homer soon after Jacob deGrom threw his final pitch of the game, giving the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner his first victory in the American League as the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Wednesday.

DeGrom (1-0) retired the first 12 batters he faced and finished with 11 strikeouts, but the game was tied 2-2 after he ended the sixth with back-to-back Ks. The right-hander, who in free agency signed a $185 million, five-year contract after his first nine big league seasons with the New York Mets, got a no-decision in the season opener.

Jung’s second homer this season came in the bottom of the sixth off Austin Voth (0-1), who had taken over in relief after top pitching prospect Grayson Rodriguez went five innings in his big-league debut and finished with a no-decision.

José Leclerc worked a perfect ninth for his first save and extended the scoreless streak for Rangers relievers to 21 1/3 innings.

Cleveland 6, Oakland 4: Andrés Giménez scored on pinch-hitter Will Brennan’s groundout for the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, Stevan Kwan followed with an RBI single and the Cleveland Guardians held off the Oakland Athletics, 6-4.

One inning after the A’s scored four runs in the eighth to tie it on Jesús Aguilar two-out, three-run homer, the Guardians recovered to win in extra innings for their second consecutive series win to begin the season.

L.A. Angels 4, Seattle 3: Shohei Ohtani held Seattle to one run in six innings and drove in a run at the plate, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners.

Ohtani (1-0) kept the Mariners scoreless after allowing a run in a bumpy first inning, finishing his day having allowed three hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Ohtani drove in Taylor Ward with a single in the top of the seventh against Mariners reliever Andrés Muñoz to put the Angels lead 4-1.

Houston 8, Detroit 2: Chas McCormick, Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Peña all homered and combined for six RBI to help the Houston Astros snap a three-game skid with an 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.

McCormick hit a two-run home run in the second off Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2) and doubled in the fourth.

Tucker homered for a second straight game with his solo home run in the fourth to help the Astros avoid a three-game sweep. Tucker added an RBI double in a two-run seventh as Houston padded the lead.

National League

Milwaukee 7, N.Y. Mets 6: Garrett Mitchell hit a tiebreaking homer off Adam Ottavino in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Mets 7-6 on Wednesday for their fifth straight victory.

Mitchell sent a 3-2 cutter from Ottavino (0-1) over the right-field wall for his third homer in his past two games. The rookie outfielder went deep twice Tuesday in a 9-0 triumph.

Atlanta 5, St. Louis 2: Matt Olson homered and drove in three, and the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-2

Bryce Elder, who was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, pitched six strong innings, giving up two hits, striking out six and walking three. Jesse Chavez retired the only batter he faced to earn his first save of the season.

Surgery for Brewers’ Ashby: Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby will have arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder and could miss the entire season.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced that Ashby would have surgery Friday in Washington.

“This puts him out for significant time,” Counsell said. “You won’t see him until late in the season at best.”

Interleague

Miami 5, Minnesota 2: Bryan De La Cruz hit a go-ahead single in the eighth, Jorge Soler homered twice and Jesús Luzardo fanned 10 to lift the Miami Marlins over the Minnesota Twins, 5-2.

Jean Segura and Jon Berti hit back-to-back one-out singles against reliever Griffin Jax (0-1) in the eighth before De La Cruz’s RBI single against Caleb Thielbar scored Segura and broke a 1-1 tie.

Openers postponed: A strong threat of rain and thunderstorms forced the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles to postpone their home openers Thursday.

All three teams announced Wednesday the openers will be pushed back a day with the Mets playing host to the Miami Marlins, the Phillies taking on the Cincinnati Reds and the Orioles facing the New York Yankees on Friday.

All three cities had weather forecasts calling for at least a 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms Thursday, the National Weather Service reported on its website.
