High school baseball

Canon-McMillan remained in sole possession of first place in Class 6A Section with a 16-13 win over Norwin on Monday.

The win moves the Big Macs to 4-0 in the section and 6-1 overall. Canon-McMillan has won six in a row.

The Big Macs erased 2-0 and 7-3 deficits, surging ahead for good on the strength of a five-run fourth inning. C-M added on seven runs in the fifth.

Andrew Kocan led the Big Macs at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI and three runs. Mason Fixx was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Austyn Winkleblech was 2-for-3 and scored three times.

Tyson Mead was the winning pitcher in relief.

High school softball

Ella Richey hit two solo home runs and Meadow Ferri pitched a one-hit shutout as Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Steel Valley 10-0 in five innings on Monday.

Both Richey and Ferri went 3-for-3 with the latter driving in three runs. Richey also had a double. Lauren Rush and Emily Swarrow also doubled for the Bucs (3-4).

Ferri walked two and struck out 10.

  • Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hitter and Ali Jacobs scored three times as Carmichaels defeated visiting Mapletown 10-0 in a Class A Section 1 game.

Barnyard struck out 10, walked one and allowed only a single by Marley Shiflett.

Jacobs had a triple for one of the three extra-base hits by the undefeated Mikes (4-0, 8-0). Barnyak and Sophia Zalar doubled.

  • Frazier scored in each of the first four innings en route to a 12-1 victory over host Bentworth in a non-section game.

Gracen Hartman and Delaney Warnick combined for five hits, including four doubles, for the Commodores (4-1), who have won four straight.

Jaclyn Tatar had a double for Bentworth (2-3), which continued a trend of alternating wins and losses.

Wild Things add catcher

The Wild Things announced Monday the signing of catcher J.C. Santini for the 2023 Frontier League season.

Santini is a rookie who played college ball last spring at Northwestern and last summer with the West Virginia Black Bears of the MLB Draft League.

Santini also played at St. Mary’s (Calif.) before transferring to Northwestern.

“J.C. comes to us with the reputation of being an excellent receiver and an outstanding thrower. In his years in college he threw out almost 50 percent of would-be base stealers, which is an almost unbelievable number,” said Wild Things manager Tom Vaeth. “I’m really excited to watch this young man compete and watch his transition and development into a professional ballplayer.”

Santini is the third catcher to be added to Washington’s roster for spring training, which begins at the end of April.

College golf

Matthew Lacek fired a round of 74 to earn medalist honors Monday en route to leading the Washington & Jefferson College men’s golf team to the title at the Westminster Invitational. The 18-hole event was contested at New Castle Country Club at the Avalon Field Club.

The Presidents finished with team score of 313 to edge Westminster (315) by two strokes. Grove City (321) and Saint Vincent (334) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the field of 13 teams.

Lacek, a Fort Cherry graduate, won his first individual title of his collegiate career. He carded a round of 74 to best Adam Steinmetz (Grove City) and Cal Cummins (Westminster) by two strokes each.

In the majors

The Tampa Bay Rays became the first major league team since the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers to open the season with 10 straight wins, getting a solo homer from Brandon Lowe in the eighth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 on Monday night.

Lowe homered for the third straight game, sending a one-out pitch from Chris Martin (0-1) into the right-field stands. Lowe has nine RBIs over his last three games.

  • Shane Bieber shook off a rough first inning to pitch seven, and Josh Naylor hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly to give the Cleveland Guardians a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in a rematch of last year’s AL Division Series.

Bieber (1-0) looked to be in trouble after giving up two runs and three hits to New York’s first four batters. But Cleveland’s ace settled in and retired 17 of 18 in one stretch. He allowed two runs and five hits.

  • Hanser Alberto hit a three-run homer, Dylan Cease had another strong outing against the Twins and the Chicago White Sox held on to beat Minnesota, 4-3.
  • Adley Rutschman homered for the second straight game, Kyle Gibson earned his third victory in as many starts with Baltimore, and the Orioles defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Monday night.

In auto racing

NASCAR suspended Cup Series driver Cody Ware indefinitely on Monday after he was arrested on charges of assault on a female and assault by strangulation inflicting serious injury.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office incident report indicated Ware was arrested Monday, one week after an incident that occurred at a residence in Mooresville. A spokesperson said Ware is no longer in custody after being released on $3,000 bond.

It was not clear if Ware had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The police report obtained by the Associated Press indicated the incident took place on April 3 just before midnight. There were no weapons involved. Because it is a domestic violence situation, no other details of the incident have been made available.

Ware didn’t participate in weekend events at Bristol Motor Speedway with Rick Ware Racing, which is owned by the driver’s father. Rick Ware Racing released a statement Saturday saying the 27-year-old driver had stepped away to focus on a personal matter.
