Ella Richey did it again to West Greene.
The Chartiers-Houston sophomore catcher hit two home runs against the Pioneers, including the go-ahead two-run blast in the sixth inning, as the Buccaneers rallied for a 6-5 victory in Class A Section 2 play Thursday afternoon at West Greene.
Richey hit two home runs, including a walk-off three-run shot when the two played on April 11.
Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 9-5) is in the driver’s seat to finish second in the section behind undefeated Carmichaels. The Pioneers (6-3, 9-6) play the Mikes (9-0, 13-0) Monday at Carmichaels and California (1-7, 2-9) two days later.
The Buccaneers host Mapletown (3-5, 5-8) on Monday before closing out the regular season at Jefferson-Morgan (5-5, 7-6).
Richey had a two-run homer in the third, as she went back-to-back with teammate Lauren Rush, who was 3-for-4.
Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri was 2-for-3, including a solo blast in the fifth.
West Greene’s London Whipkey doubled and scored two runs. Teammates Lexi Six and Marissa Tharp doubled and scored a run.
- Charleroi scored three runs in the first inning and that was more than enough offensive production for Lyla Brunner in the Cougars’ 14-0 victory at Washington in Class 2A Section 3.
Charleroi (7-2, 12-2) is one game back of first place Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH), who lost the Cougars, 3-1, on April 14. Charleroi lost both games to third-place Burgettstown (6-3, 9-5).
The Cougars host OLSH on May 1 at 4 p.m. in what could decide the section. The Chargers host Fort Cherry (6-4, 7-6) today at 5 p.m.
Brunner struck out 11 and walked one batter in the two-hits shutout. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
McKenna DeUnger was 2-for-3 with a home run. Maddie Lancy was 3-for-4 with a double and Avery Pendo and Leena Henderson had two base hits apiece.
- Ringgold battled cut the deficit to one in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback against Laurel Highlands in a 10-9 setback in Class 4A Section 2 play.
The Rams (0-9, 1-11) trailed the Mustangs (3-8, 3-9) by four after two innings, but came back with two runs in the third and two in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-4 heading into the fifth.
Laurel Highlands scored four in the frame for a 9-4 advantage, but Ringgold added two of its own for a 9-6 lead for the visitors. The Rams added two in the sixth before the Mustangs scored one more insurance run in the top of the seventh that would prove to be the difference.
Angie Allen, Alice Ramous and Hailey Robertson doubled for Ringgold.
- First-place West Allegheny was too much for South Fayette in a 14-2 victory in Class 5A Section 3 play.
The Lions (5-4, 8-8) are still in second place ahead of Mars (4-4) and Moon (3-5). The top four teams in the section qualify for the playoffs.
The Indians (9-0, 16-1) had 20 hits, including doubles by Ava Henke, who had two, Aubrey Police, Adriana Vicari-Baker and Adrianna Arnal.
Savanna Benish and Police tripled, and Emily Nolan homered for West Allegheny.
Eliana Vicari-Baker struck out six and walked one in earning the win.
Rylee Rohbeck had all of South Fayette’s hits with two, a double and single.
- Brooke Boehmer, Deidre Flaherty and Dani McClinchie hit first-inning home runs to lead Mt. Lebanon to a 13-9 victory over Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 1.
The Blue Devils (3-7, 4-8) scored six runs in the first.
The Big Macs (4-7, 5-8) had six in the fifth, but couldn’t get the tying run.
Skylah Steban and Emma Houck doubled for Canon-McMillan. Houck had three hits and Steban two.
High school baseball
Canon-McMillan rallied from a three-run deficit for a 10-6 victory at Baldwin in Class 6A Section 2 play.
The first-place Big Macs (9-3, 11-4) have won four straight since an 11-1 setback to second-place Hempfield (7-5) on April 19.
Mason Fixx’s sacrifice fly in the sixth turned out to be the winning RBI. Austyn Winkleblech and Will Taczak doubled for Canon-McMillan.
Roman Mollenauer struck out five and walked four in earning the win.
- Chartiers-Houston scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a 13-2 non-section victory over Brentwood.
The Buccaneers’ Nico Filosi doubled twice. Teammates Dominic Cumer, Jake Mele and Paul Williamson had extra-base hits.
Anthony Romano had six strikeouts and walked three in earning the win.
The Bucs improved to 13-2.
- Ty Groves and Nick Willard combined for a one-hit shutout in Waynesburg’s 10-0 win over Jefferson-Morgan in non-section play.
Groves allowed one hit in five innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. Willard pitched a perfect sixth.
Derek Turcheck tripled for the Raiders (6-5). Teammate Austin Surber doubled.
- Beth-Center scored six runs in the eighth inning to top Mapletown, 13-7, in non-section play.
Ethan Varesko had eight strikeouts and walked two in earning the win in relief. He also had three doubles. Tyson Dingle doubled for the Bulldogs (4-10).
A.J. Vanata hit a two-run homer for the Maples (1-10).
