In the NFL
The Arizona Cardinals have traded Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants, moving on from the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 draft after three lackluster seasons.
The Giants are sending a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft to the Cardinals.
The 25-year-old Simmons was seen as a can’t-miss defensive prospect in the 2020 draft after a stellar college career at Clemson. But the 6-4, 238-pounder never found a role with the Cardinals and was attempting to move to safety from linebacker this preseason.
- What started out as the Denver Broncos’ deepest position group ended up as their thinnest after wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was carted off the field with a hamstring injury Thursday.
Jeudy was running an end-around in an 11-on-11 red zone drill in a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams when he pulled up, grabbing his right hamstring and crumpling to the grass near the sideline.
He had to be helped to the cart, then was taken for an MRI.
“Hopefully it’s not anything long term,” coach Sean Payton said.
- Just hours after Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski said he was the team’s No. 2 quarterback, Joshua Dobbs was traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in 2024.
The Browns sent Dobbs and a seventh-round pick to the Cardinals, who have current uncertainty at quarterback while starter Kyler Murray recovers from season-ending knee surgery.
Dobbs’ stunning departure means Browns rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson will back up starter Deshaun Watson.
- Julian Edelman is joining “Fox NFL Kickoff” for the upcoming season.
Edelman, who won three Super Bowl titles in 12 seasons with the New England Patriots, is replacing Sean Payton on the show, which airs at 11 a.m. EDT on Sundays.
It is not Edelman’s first analyst gig. He was on “Inside the NFL” the past two seasons after retiring from the league following the 2020 season.
In boxing
Oleksandr Usyk defends his heavyweight boxing titles for the first time in a year when he faces hard-hitting British challenger Daniel Dubois on Saturday. A win could revive plans for a unification fight with Tyson Fury.
The Ukrainian champion, who took up a rifle when his country was invaded by Russia last year, is set to have passionate backing from the crowd in Poland, which is a close ally of Ukraine.
Usyk hasn’t fought since a rematch with Anthony Joshua in August 2022, after talks broke down to stage a fight with WBC champion Fury that would have crowned the first undisputed men’s world heavyweight champion since 2000.
In track and field
Jamaica has had plenty of big nights at the World Track & Field Championships over the decades. Never one quite like this.
Athletes from the island of sun and sprints won five medals Thursday night, four of which came in hurdles and long jump. The other came in the 400 meters.
The five-medal haul brings Jamaica’s total to eight in Budapest, placing it second on the medals table, only behind the United States, which has 19.
Possibly the biggest surprise was a victory in the 100-meter hurdles by Danielle Williams. Racing in the inside lane, Williams produced a season best time of 12.43, edging Olympic record holder Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico by .01 seconds.
Dutch standout Femke Bol opened a wide lead and never looked back in the final of the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Bol won her first world title in a time of 51.70 seconds.
