1955 – Jim Walters of Carmichaels sets the WPIAL basketball single-game scoring record with 60 points in an 80-53 victory over West Bethlehem. Walters makes 27 field goals and six of eight free throws. He breaks the WPIAL record of 54 points set by Rochester’s Barney Gable in the 1953-54 season. It’s the second time in a week that West Bethlehem allows an opponent to score at least 53 points.
1955 – Jamie Kimbrough makes a free throw with one second remaining to give Washington a 62-61 vicrtory over visiting McKeesport.
1958 – Waynesburg High School’s wrestling team runs its winning streak to 20 matches with a 27-12 victory over Trinity. The only pin of the match is by Waynesburg’s John Ketchem at 154 pounds.
1970 – Wil Robinson scores 17 points as West Virginia wins at Pitt, 67-66. After Pitt is called for a technical foul in the second half, a fan throws a dead fish onto the court. Pitt coach Buzz Ridl grabs the PA microphone and urges fans to refrain from such actions.
1973 – The Miami Dolphins, who went 14-0 in the regular season and won two playoff games, beat the Washington Redskins, 14-7, in the Super Bowl to become the only undefeated team in NFL history.
1985 – Washington High School running back Brian Davis is named Offensive Player of the Year by Parade Magazine on its All-America football team.
1986 – Billy Coyle scores a career-high 31 points and Canon-McMillan defeats visiting Mt. Lebanon 63-53 to move into first place in Section 5-AAAA.
1993 – Burgettstown girls basketball player Carrie Zickefoose reaches two milestones in the Blue Devils’ 65-39 win over Bentworth. Zickefoose scores 26 points, including her 1,000th career point during the third quarter, and grabs her 1,000th career rebound in the fourth quarter.
1996 – Byron “Bam” Morris scores on a one-yard run with 1:34 remaining and a last-second Indianapolis pass into the end zone falls incomplete as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Colts, 20-16, in the AFC Championship game.
2010 – Anna Shashura and Megan Sowers each score 15 points as Beth-Center hands Washington its first girls basketball section loss in three years, 47-32.

1943 – The Pittsburgh Pirates announce they will hold spring training in Muncie, Ind.
1955 – Waynesburg College’s wrestling team edges visiting Ohio State 16-11. The Yellow Jackets get a fall from Ray Carlson in the pivotal 177-pound bout. Carlson is a minister who is the pastor at First Methodist Church in Jefferson. John Nicolella, captain of Ohio State’s team and a Washington High School graduate, wins a 5-1 decision at 123.
1967 – The NFL’s Green Bay Packers open the Super Bowl series by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL, 35-10.
1971 – The Pittsburgh Condors withstand a 53-point performance by New York’s Rick Barry and beat the Nets 120-117 in a fight-filled ABA game.
1973 – The Washington School Board accepts the resignation of head football coach Dave Johnston. In 13 seasons, Johnston had a 74-43-2 record and guided Wash High to five conference championships.
1985 – Senior heavyweight Mike Sprouse wins a 2-1 decision in the final bout to give Peters Township High School a 25-24 upset of No. 2-ranked Trinity. It’s only the second win in school history for PT over Trinity.
1991 – Bridget Durkan scores a school-record 39 points, leading Canon-McMillan to a 78-60 victory over Waynesburg in a non-section girls basketball game. Durkan breaks the C-M single-game record of 33 points, set by Maria Janco in 1988.
1994 – Edinboro overcomes a 13-point halftime deficit and upsets California, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, 74-68, at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans make only eight of 22 free throws, including just one of nine in the second half.
1995 – San Diego linebacker Dennis Gibson twice knocks down passes in the end zone — the last one on fourth down — to preserve the Chargers’ biggest NFL victory, a 17-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship.
1997 – Patrick Lalime becomes the first goalie since NHL expansion in 1967 to open his career with a 15-game unbeaten streak as Pittsburgh beats Hartford, 3-0.
2013 – Tanner Huffman scores 23 points and California overcomes an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Charleroi 55-52 and hand the Cougars their first Section 5-AA loss.
