1941 – Washington boxer Sammy Angott wins a majority decision over previously unbeaten Harry Hurst at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. It’s Hurst’s first loss in 27 pro fights.

1956 – A basket by Eddie Allen a free throw from Beanie Gordon in the final 30 seconds help Washington High School edge Trinity 59-54 and give the Little Prexies their 74th consecutive section basketball victory.

1961 – Mike George decisions Bill Anderson 2-0 in the heavyweight bout to give Waynesburg a 25-21 victory over Trinity in a battle of undefeated wrestling teams. It’s Waynesburg’s 68th win its last 69 matches.

1963 – Cassius Clay knocks out rugged but outclassed Charley Powell in the third round of a scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout before 11,000 at the Civic Arena. Clay improves his record to 17-0.

1990 – McGuffey wins its first Section 6-AAA wrestling championship by defeating Trinity, 26-24. It’s only the second win for McGuffey over Trinity in 42 dual meets and the first since a 30-27 victory in 1973.

1993 – California University hires Kevin Donley as its head football coach. Donley coached Georgetown (Ky.) to the 1991 NAIA national championship.

2000 – Ray Robinson sets the Waynesburg College single-game basketball scoring record with 45 points in an 89-86 win over Penn State-Altoona.

1997 – Mike Deegan scores 34 points in Trinity’s 74-65 loss to Central Catholic and becomes the Hillers’ boys basketball all-time leading scorer with 1,214 points, surpassing Tim O’Connor’s record of 1,202 points.
