1955 – Throwing on three days rest, Pittsburgh’s Vernon Law pitches 18 innings but doesn’t get a decision in the Pirates’ 4-3 victory in 19 innings over the Milwaukee Braves at Forbes Field. Law, pitching on three days rest, gives up nine hits and two walks. He strikes out 12.
1961 – The Pittsburgh Steelers trade end Jimmy Orr, tackle Joe Lewis and linebacker Dick Campbell to the Baltimore Colts for center Buz Nutter and former all-pro defensive lineman Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb.
1972 – The Meadows racetrack draws “a couple thousand” more spectators than normal to its Wednesday night card, the result of a special promotional appearance by NBA and former college basketball superstar “Pistol” Pete Maravich.
1976 – Hank Aaron hits the 755th and final home run of his career to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 win over California.
1990 – Pete Rose, baseball’s career hits leader, is sentenced to five months in prison and an additional three months in a halfway house for cheating on his taxes.
2004 – Pittsburgh is awarded its record-tying fifth baseball all-star game. PNC Park will host the 2006 game.
HOLE-IN-ONE
Gary Veltre had a hole-in-one Monday at Greene County Country Club. Veltre aced the 142-yard No. 5 hole by using a 6-iron. Witnesses were Bob Kelley, Bob Areford and Terry Jurkvosky.
