1952 – Bob Mathias wins his second Olympic decathlon in Helsinki.
1956 – Roberto Clemente becomes the only major leaguer to hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 9-8 at Forbes Field.
1974 – Dock Ellis pitches 8 2/3 shutout innings, and Willie Stargell triples and drives in a run, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Montreal Expos 3-0 at Jarry Park. The game time is only one hour and 47 minutes.
1986 – The Pittsburgh Steelers trim their roster by releasing two players, including former Waynesburg College nose tackle Pete Long.
