1955 – Bill McLhinney is hired to replace Milt Decker as Trinity High School’s basketball coach.
1956 – Hickory High School wins the team title at the Washington-Greene Conference track meet. Mt. Morris’ John Diehl sets meet records in the shot put (47-9) and broad jump (19-9).
1971 – Steve Dunning of the Cleveland Indians becomes the last American League pitcher to hit a grand slam. Dunning homers in the second inning off Oakland’s Diego Segui in a 7-5 Cleveland win.
1976 – Trinity’s Gina Piatt and Burgettstown’s Kathe Dvorchak win events at the WPGAL Track & Field Championships. Piatt wins the discus (131-6) and finishes second in the shot put. Dvorchak wins the triple (35-1).
1991 – The Pittsburgh Penguins win their first Prince of Wales Conference championship, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games, and earn the right to play in their first Stanley Cup Finals.
1996 – Jaromir Jagr scores his first playoff hat trick, and Mario Lemeiux has his first playoff hat trick in seven years, as the Pittsburgh Penguins eliminate the New York Rangers 7-3 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
2012 – Aaron Klinec drive in four runs and Washington & Jefferson’s baseball team gets its 35th win of the season, 10-4 over Saint Vincent, to advance to the finals of the Presidents Athletic Conference tournament.
2013 – Washington & Jefferson defeats Thomas More 9-3 to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship.
