1952 – Bob Wagner pitches a five-hitter and Gene Steratore hits a home run as Washington defeats Bethel Park 8-3 in the first round of the WPIAL baseball playoffs in Dormont.
1953 – Canonsburg’s Pete Nikas wins the Class A title in the 880-yard run at the PIAA Track & Field Championships in State College. Centerville’s Bob Pugh ties for the Class B high jump title, clearing 5-8 1/2.
1977 – California High School lefty Curt Carpenter strikes out 17 as the Trojans defeat defending WPIAL champion Elizabeth Forward 3-0 in a first-round baseball playoff game at Charleroi.
1965 – Mike Pavella, veteran professional at Washington Country Club, wins the Western Pennsylvania Open at Youghiogheny Country Club with a record-breaking score of 11-under par 133.
1983 – Marsha Janco pitches a two-hitter and Amy Walker hits a grand slam as Canon-McMillan clinches the school’s first WPIAL softball playoff berth with a 13-2 win over Mt. Lebanon.
1985 – Harding “Pete” Peterson is fired as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Former GM Joe L. Brown is hired on an interim basis.
1986 – Chartiers-Houston junior Mark Simpson wins the Class AA javelin competition at the PIAA Track & Field Championships with a throw of 202-4. Simpson’s personal best entering the day was 187-0.
1997 – Washington & Jefferson’s Jaimee Huffner bests three-time defending champion Renee Erickson of Concordia and wins the javelin competition at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Lacrosse, Wisc. Huffner wins with a throw of 144-9. It’s the first national championship won by a W&J athlete.
2000 – Officials from the state government, Washington & Jefferson College and PONY Baseball, Inc., announce that a sports complex that includes a minor league baseball stadium, will be built in North Franklin Township behind the Washington Crown Center Mall. The private-public venture is expected to cost more than $10 million.
2003 – Aaron Janusey’s three-run homer in the first inning propels Peters Township to a 9-5 victory over No. 3 seed Seneca Valley in the WPIAL Class AAA baseball quarterfinals at Shaler High School.
2012 – Lindsey Osborne hits a two-run single to right field in the fifth inning to complete a five-run comeback and Morgan Berardi chops a single over the third baseman’s head in the ninth to drive in the winning run in Carmichaels’ 6-5 victory over previously undefeated Sto-Rox in the WPIAL Class A softball semifinals.
2013 – Canon-McMillan’s Alayna Astuto pitches a seven-inning perfect game, retiring all 21 batters she faces in the Big Macs’ 5-0 victory over Hempfield in the WPIAL Class AAAA softball semifinals at California University. Astuto strikes out seven.
