1935 – The first night game in major league history is played at Cincinnati with the Reds beating the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.
1947 – Chuck Coles hits a home run and pitches a five-hitter to power Section 19 champion Jefferson to a 9-3 victory over Section 20 winner East Pike Run in the WPIAL baseball playoffs at Charleroi.
1951 – Jefferson scores six runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally for a 9-5 win over Monongahela in a second round WPIAL baseball playoff game at Brownsville. John Yourchik drives in the go-ahead run and scores three times for the Jeffs.
1958 – Washington senior Chuck Smith wins the state high jump title, clearing 6-3, at the PIAA meet at Penn State.
1969 – Washington High School’s Chuck Eneix throws to discus 168-9 to win the PIAA championship.
1982 – Down to its final strike, Burgettstown scores three runs on a bases-loaded hit by Wes Harrington in the top of the seventh inning and defeats Washington 3-2 to win the Section 12-AA baseball title. It’s the Blue Devils’ first section title in 21 years.
1984 – Brian Zanardelli pitches a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts, and Randy Wadsworth hits a solo home run, as California defeats German Township 3-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA baseball playoffs at Charleroi. The only hit for German is a fourth-inning single by Sam Mannery.
2000 – Scott Venick, defensive coordinator at Ringgold, is promoted to head football coach, replacing Chuck Colborn.
2002 – Waynesburg’s Jocelyn Lindsay wins the Class AA girls pole vault by clearing 12 feet, and the Raiders’ Nathan Freedman finishes second in the boys pole vault at the PIAA Track & Field Championships. The gold medal is the second for Lindsay.
2002 – Justin Gregula pitches a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as Washington blanks Burrell 6-0 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals at Mt. Pleasant.
2003 – Peters Township’s Matt Warco holds off Garnet Valley’s Ryan Reeser Manheim Township’s Tyler Nichols to win the Class AAA 800-meter run in 1:53.34 at the PIAA Track & Field Championships.
2005 – Andy McIlvaine pitches a three-hitter and strikes out 10 as undefeated Chartiers-Houston beats California 5-1 in the WPIAL Class A baseball semifinals at Belle Vernon.
2005 – Carmichaels edges Union, 2-0, in the WPIAL Class A baseball semifinals. The Mikes (20-1) advance to play Chartiers-Houston in the title game. Jared Lapkowicz scatters three hits, strikes out seven and doesn’t walk a batter. Phil Judy drives in Jamie Bandish for the first run of the game and Lapkowicz had the second RBI.
2011 – Blake Ochoa, Emilio Ontiveros and Kevyn Feiner, the bottom three hitters in Washington’s lineup, combine for five hits and five RBI as the Wild Things win their home opener, defeating the Traverse City Beach Bums, 10-3. The Wild Things went 0-12 against the Beach Bums in 2010.
