1956 – Charleroi High School’s Carl Whitmyer and Roger Hough combine on a no-hitter as the Cougars defeat Centerville 9-0 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs.

1956 – John Dunn pitches a three-hit shutout as Burgettstown Union blanks Stowe Township 6-0 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs at Crafton. Dunn, who strikes out eight, drives in two runs with a single in the fourth inning.

1961 – Burgettstown Union advances to the WPIAL baseball quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Mt. Lebanon at Canonsburg. Tom Bednarzik pitches a five-hitter and Pete Blue drives in both runs for the Blue Devils.

1967 – Winning pitcher Bob Glister hits a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Jefferson-Morgan a 2-1 victory over Bentworth in the Section 16 baseball tiebreaker game in Monongahela. Glister pitches a two-hitter wth 13 strikeouts.

1972 – Joe Bilitski pitches a two-hitter, and Tony Bilitski hits a three-run homer in the first inning, as California defeats Canon-McMillan 5-2 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs at Washington Park.

1973 – Willie Stargell hits a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Stargell’s homer, off Gary Gentry, lands in the upper deck. It’s the fourth upper-deck homer at Three Rivers Stadium, each hit by Stargell.

1975 – Catcher Frank Ovial drives in Steve Herron from second base in the second and sixth innings, and Bob Ferguson pitches a three-hitter, as California advances to the WPIAL baseball semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Richland.

1977 – Scott Stevens pitches a five-hitter as Washington wins its third consecutive one-run game in the WPIAL baseball playoffs, 2-1, over Hopewell in the semifinals.

1979 – The Big East Conference is formed with Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Syracuse as members. Holy Cross and Rutgers are invited but decline to join.

1987 – Trinity High School state wrestling champion Bob Truby is named the Observer-Reporter Scholastic Athlete of the Year.

1988 – Tricia Fabian pitches a four-hit shutout and Chartiers-Houston routs previously undefeated Geibel 9-0 in a WPIAL Class AA softball semifinal at Ringgold High School.

2001 – California defeats Riverview 7-2 to win the WPIAL Class A baseball championship.

2005 – Jared Lapkowicz pitches a one-hit shutout, and Phil Judy and Jamie Bandish each have run-scoring hits as Carmichaels defeats previously unbeaten Chartiers-Houston 2-0 in the WPIAL Class A baseball championship game at Falconi Field.

2007 – The Pittsburgh Penguins announce that 19-year-old Sidney Crosby will become the youngest player in league history to be named team captain.

2012 – Sophomore third baseman Olivia Lorusso’s three-run homer in the fourth inning sends Canon-McMillan to a 4-1 victory over Hempfield in the WPIAL Class AAAA softball championship game at California University’s Lilley Field. It’s the first WPIAL softball title in Canon-Mac history.

2012 – Piper McLaughlin’s two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth inning gives Chartiers-Houston a 3-2 win over Carmichaels in the WPIAL Class A softball championship game.
