The Monessen Shade Tree Commission and volunteers celebrated their annual Arbor Day on Saturday by planting trees at Anthony Madison Park to honor local and fallen veterans. The 11 trees planted honor veterans who were either lost or survived a Scud missile attack during the Gulf War in 1991. In the last three years, the shade tree commission has planted more than 50 trees in the city’s emerging green spaces. Saturday’s volunteers included students from Monessen Middle School’s National Honor Society and student council, Belle Vernon Boy Scout Troop No. 1543, the Mon Valley NAACP and representatives from Monessen City Council and administration.
