1961 – Ted Vactor runs for two touchdowns and intercepts a pass to set up another score as Washinton High School defeats visiting Mt. Lebanon, 28-0.

1971 – Richie Hebner and Al Oliver each hit home runs and drive in three runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the San Francisco Giants, 9-5, and win the National League Championship Series in four games.

1973 – The football game between California State and Waynesburg at College Field is postponed because the game’s officials do not show up. Following a wait of two hours, the decision to postpone the game until later in the season is reached.

1978 – Bob Jones rushes for 147 yards and two touchdowns as Carmichaels remains undefeated in the Tri-County South Conference with a 20-14 victory over Jefferson-Morgan. Jones’ one-yard TD run in the third quarter caps a 19-play, 95-yard drive in which he gained 47 yards on 12 carries.

1979 – Jay Jones scores on runs of four, six and one yards as strike-torn West Greene improves to 5-0 with an 18-6 victory at Fairchance-Georges.

1981 – Pitt announces it will withdraw from the Eastern Eight basketball conference at the end of the 1981-82 season. Pitt is considering an alliance with the Big East.

1985 – San Francisco’s Joe Montana passes for 429 yards and five touchdowns and sets an NFL record with 57 passes attempted and no interceptions in a 38-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

1989 – Keith Cushenberry breaks up a two-point conversion pass with 1:09 remaining and intercepts a pass with 20 seconds left to preserve Washington’s 7-6 victory over Peters Township in a Century Conference game.

1989 – Greg Marinkovich kicks a 26-yard field goal with six seconds left to give Ringgold a 31-28 victory over Bethel Park.

1991 – John Smiley pitches seven scorless innings in the regular-season finale to win his 20th game as the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Montreal Expos 7-0 at Three Rivers Stadium.

2006 – Beth-Center’s defense forces four fourth-quarter turnovers by Serra Catholic and the Bulldogs hold off the visiting Eagles, 13-6, in a game between Black Hills Conference unbeatens. Ryan Butka and Steve Hvizda each run for a touchdown for Beth-Center.

2007 – California High School’s Donte Valentino runs for two touchdowns, passes for another and tops the 4,000-yard mark for career rushing as the Trojans defeat Geibel, 33-6. Valentino rushes for 165 yards, has 4,052 career yards and tops the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season.

2007 – Chadron State running back Danny Woodhead breaks the NCAA all-divisions career rushing record in a game against Western New Mexico. Woodhead gets the 121 yards he needed by the third quarter to surpass the previous record of 7,353 yards held by R.J. Bowers, who set the record from 1997-2000 at Division III Grove City.

2013 – Pedro Alvarez hits a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals for a 2-1 lead in the National League Division series.
