1945 – The Chicago Cardinals snap the longest losing streak in NFL history at 29 games with a 16-7 victory over the Chicago Bears.
1960 – Trinity High School’s Moses Bailey scores four touchdowns as the Hillers defeat Vandergrift 25-14. Bailey scores on runs of 15, 45 and 65 yards and returns a kickoff 90 yards for Trinity’s first score.
1971 – Pittsburgh’s Nelson Briles throws a two-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles for a 4-0 victory that gives the Pirates a 3-2 edge in the World Series.
1976 – Bentworth High School hires Tom Teagarden, a former WPIAL and state champion at McGuffey, as the Bearcats’ wrestling coach.
1988 – J.B. Kulik throws for three touchdown passes as Washington rallies for a 19-10 win over previously undefeated Waynesburg.
1990 – Joe Montana passes for career highs of 476 yards and six touchdowns as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons, 45-35
2005 – Ryan Geisel rushes for 121 and two touchdowns as Mapletown clinches at least a share of its first Tri-County South Conference title since 1988 with a 28-6 victory over Frazier.
2005 – Dante Valentino leads California’s comeback from a 22-point deficit as the Trojans beat West Greene 28-25 in overtime. Valentino scores the game-tying touchdown with 45 seconds left in regulation and throws an 11-yard pass to Stephen Chester to win for the winning score.
2011 – Waynesburg’s Nick Zupper rushes for 383 yards and scores four touchdowns as the Raiders defeat Yough, 42-23.
2013 – Kirsten McMichael of Ringgold breaks her own school record in winning the girls division of the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Meet held at Mingo Park. McMichael crosses the finish line in 19:20.3. Canon-McMillan’s Jonathan Weese edges teammate Ethan Lindeman by 1.2 seconds to win the boys race.

1925 – The Pittsburgh Pirates score three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators, 9-7, and win the World Series. Kiki Cuyler’s bases-loaded double in the eighth provides the winning margin.
1954 – Heavy rain from Hurricane Hazel causes the postponement of all area high school football games.
1970 – Professional basketball returns to Pittsburgh as 3,616 show up the Civic Arena to watch the Pittsburgh Condors of the ABA defeat the New York Nets, 105-102. Charlie Williams scores 29 points for the Condors.
1971 – Visiting California High School outscores Beth-Center 24-0 in the fourth quarter and rallies for a 39-30 victory in a Century Conference football game. The Trojans’ final two scores are touchdown passes of 28 and 13 yards from Wally Wright to Terry Luko.
1976 – Gary Kusich rushes for 152 yards and three touchdowns, Rob Bogo has 128 yards and two TDs, and Jim Floyd runs for 102 yards and returns an interception for a score as Avella improves to 6-0 with a 39-22 victory at Bentworth. It’s only the second loss for the Bearcats.
1976 – Harry Pappas completes nine of 19 passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns as Burgettstown takes control of the Black Hills Conference playoff race with a 37-27 victory at Fort Cherry.
1988 – Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins scores eight points — two goals and six assists — in a 9-2 win over the St. Louis Blues at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh.
1988 – With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Kirk Gibson hit a two-run, pinch homer to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Oakland in Game 1 of the World Series. Gibson, who did not start because of a strained left knee, limped around the bases as the Dodgers won one of the most dramatic games in series history.
1994 – In a game that had almost every kind of scoring play imaginable, Pitt rallies from a 31-6 deficit to take a 41-40 lead in the final minute over visiting West Virginia. However, WVU’s Zach Abraham gets behind the Pitt secondary and catches a 60-yard touchdown pass from Chad Johnston with 15 seconds remaining as the Mountaineers win, 47-41.
2004 – Tim Betts kicks a 26-yard field goal as time expires to give Chartiers-Houston a 10-7 victory over host Beth-Center and keep the Bucs’ playoff hopes alive.
2007 – Canon-McMillan’s Julian Rankin and Trinity’s Chelsea Sumney earn close wins in the boys and girls races, respectively, at the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Championships at Mingo Park.
2012 – Marco Bennett of Burgettstown trails the race leader by almost a quarter-mile by charges back to win the boys race in the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Invitational at Mingo Park. Ringgold’s Kirsten McMichael wins the girls race.
2013 – Waynesburg Central hires former West Virginia and California University player Drew Schifino as its boys basketball coach.
