Boys soccer

North Allegheny scored four second-half goals in a 6-1 victory over Canon-McMillan on Saturday at North Allegheny in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 4A soccer playoffs.

The Tigers (14-1-3) advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals, where they will play Butler (13-2-3). The site and time have yet to be determined. The Golden Tornado defeated Peters Township, 3-0, to reach the round of four.

Canon-McMillan (10-7-1) had an own goal in the fourth minute as North Allegheny’s Arnav Patel played the ball inside the Big Macs’ box.

Canon-McMillan’s Ryan Galicic hit the post in the ninth minute before the Big Macs tied the match in the 11th minute as Louis Liberatore’s throw-in from 30 yards out found its way past Tigers keeper Dante Accamando.

Joey Voijtas scored the game winner in the 32nd minute. in the 32nd minute, CK goal. NA 2-1

Canon-McMillan keeper Ryan Simonette stopped Patel with 15 seconds left in the first half to keep his team in the match. Simonette made 14 saves.

Zach Nash fed William Love for a goal in the 54th minute and Nathan Katari’s penalty-kick goal in the 55th increased North Allegheny’s lead to 4-1.

Voijtas’ brace came in the 63rd minute and Nash closed the scoring in the 68th minute.

Accamando stopped four shots on target.

Girls soccer

Charleroi opened the scoring 50 seconds into the match on McKenna DeUnger’s 100th career goal, but Springdale scored the next four and earned a 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class A girls soccer playoffs Saturday afternoon at Myron Pottios Stadium.

Springdale (13-3-1) meets the second seed, Freedom, in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Cougars’ season comes to an end with a record of 15-2-0.

DeUnger’s goal didn’t deter Springdale, as Molly Hurley netted her first of three 34 seconds later. Hurtley’s second tally was at 22:38 of the first half and her third, which was the game winner, came at 2:20 of the first half.

Springdale added another goal before halftime for a 4-1 lead.

Rhianna Grogan cut the deficit to 4-2 with 29 minutes remaining before Hailey Marchlewski put the match away for Springdale two minutes later.

  • In other girls playoff action, Chartiers-Houston had its season come to an end in a 3-0 setback to top seed, Riverview. The Buccaneers finished the year at 14-4-0.

Field hockey

Peters Township defeated Mount Lebanon, 1-0, to advance to the Class 3A WPIAL finals on Nov. 4 at Washington & Jefferson College’s Cameron Stadium.

The Indians will face Pine-Richlands, and the match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

High school football

California had clinched the Class A Tri-County South title prior to Friday’s game at Bentworth, but the Trojans didn’t have a letdown in a 61-0 victory in the regular-season finale.

California finished 7-0 in conference play and 9-1 overall.

Spencer Petrucci and Jake Layhue combined to rush for 231 yards with Petrucci gaining 131 and Layhue added 101. Petrucci scored four touchdowns and Layhue added two.
