1960 – The Pittsburgh Steelers hold their final training camp practice at California State Teachers College before switching to their practice home at South Park.

1963 – Marvin Lipscomb runs for touchdowns of 60 and 68 yards to lead Trinity High School to a 26-0 season-opening football victory over West Allegheny at College Field.

1965 – Burgettstown native Mike Nixon is hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, one day after Buddy Parker unexpectedly resigned following a preseason game.

1969 – Jerry Patterson rushes for 253 yards on only six carries, scoring on runs of 71, 38 and 96 yards, as Chartiers-Houston wins at Peters Township, 28-6.

1973 – The Pittsburgh Pirates, with a 67-69 record, fire manager Bill Virdon and replace him with Danny Murtaugh.

1978 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade right wing Jean Pronovost to the Atlanta Flames as part of a three-team deal that nets the Penguins Gregg Sheppard from Boston. Pronovost is the Penguins’ all-time scoring leader at the time of the trade.

1978 – Rookie Don Robinson pitches a five-hitter and the Pittsburgh Pirates win their 11th straight game, 4-1 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

1982 – The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Willie Stargell’s No. 8 in pregame ceremonies. Stargell delivers a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning of the Pirates’ 6-1 win over the New York Mets.

1991 – Ty Wormsley rushes for 282 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries as Trinity defeats host Latrobe 36-20. Wormsley scores on runs of 27, one, five and seven yards.

1991 – Don Wamsley scores his third touchdown of the game, on a 23-yard pass from Barry Gansor with 14 seconds left, to give Mapletown an 18-12 victory over visting South Fayette. Wamsley also scored on runs of two and 46 yards.

1995 – Bruce Parkhill unexpectedly resigns as Penn State’s basketball coach, saying he is burned out by the rigors of coaching. Parkhill had a 181-169 record with the Nittany Lions. He is replaced by assistant Jerry Dunn.

2002 – Travis Thomas scores on a six-yard touchdown run with 1:19 remaining, and David Calabrese runs for a two-point conversion, as Washington wins at South Fayette, 8-7.

2013 – Shai McKenzie runs for 218 yards and five touchowns on only nine carries in Washington’s 48-13 victory over Southmoreland to pass Brian Davis and become the Prexies’ all-time rushing leader.

2013 – Fort Cherry quarterback Matt Heslin completes eight of 11 passes for 165 yards and five touchowns — three to Alex Babirad — in the Rangers’ 50-14 win over California.
