1952 – Stan Musial gets his 2,000th career hit in St. Louis’ 7-4 win over Philadelphia.

1960 – John Mraz runs for touchdowns of 65 and 25 yards to power Ellsworth to a 12-2 season-opening football victory over Mon Valley Catholic.

1972 – The Soviet Union, given three chances to play the game’s final three seconds, scores on a basket by Alexander Belov to upset the United States, 52-51, in the gold medal basketball game in the Munich Olympics. The loss ends the United States’ 63-game Olympic basketball winning streak. The U.S. players decline to appear at the medals ceremony and refuse their silver medals.

1980 – Bob Boone’s 14th-inning squeeze bunt scores Garry Maddox and gives the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1988 – Aaron Borello runs for one touchdown and throws for another as McGuffey overcomes a double-digit first-quarter deficit and rallies to win its 19th straight home game, 19-12, over Burgettstown.

1994 – Bentworth High School ends a 30-game football losing streak by playing host California to a bizarre 2-2 tie. The game ends with Bentworth on the California five-yard line.

2002 – Trinity’s Ed Dalton and Beth-Center’s Ed Woods are among 17 WPIAL football coaches who are suspended for one game for violation of the PIAA’s in-season, out-of-season regulations. The teams conducted scrimmages during summer camps at California and Slippery Rock universities.

2018 – Cleveland ends its 17-game losing streak with a 21-21 tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1965 – Al Sabol throws a 10-yard touchdown pass to Sam Mazzaferi with 1:10 remaining to give Beth-Center High School a 19-13 victory over visiting Gladstone in a football season opener.

1971 – Sophomore John Menhart scores on runs of 43, 64, one and 60 yards, and also runs for a two-point conversion, as host Carmichaels defeats Jefferson-Morgan 28-16 in a season-opening football game.

1988 – Belle Vernon blasts Chartiers Valley 54-14 to give Leopards head coach Bill Connors his 150th career victory.

1989 – The visiting Cleveland Browns rout the Pittsburgh Steelers 51-0 in the season opener. It’s Pittsburgh’s worst loss since a 54-7 setback against the Greene Bay Packers in 1941.

1994 – Glenville State, coached by Rich Rodriguez, racks up 534 total yards and defeats California 53-28 at Adamson Stadium.

1999 – Peters Township’s Steve Zellner intercepts a pass and returns it 35 yards for a first-quarter touchdown and the Indians’ defense holds Thomas Jefferson to a pair of field goals in a 13-6 upset victory.
