Boys soccer
Brett Martin scored two goals and Peters Township moved above the .500 mark in Class 4A Section 2 play with a 4-0 win Tuesday over Mt. Lebanon.
Nathan Froelich and Dante Pusateri also had goal for the Indians (3-2, 4-2).
- Landon Barcus’ hat trick and Ethan Hartley’s two goals were more than enough for Charleroi in a 9-1 victory in Class A Section 2 at Ligonier Valley.
Arlo McIntyre, Bryce Large, Joel Chambers and Ritchentzky Charleus also scored for the undefeated Cougars (4-0, 8-0).
Barcus and Jake Chambers had two assists each. Hartley, McIntyre, Joel Chambers, Dylan Klinger and Luke Mazon had helpers.
- Trevor Kovatch recorded a hat trick and Belle Vernon breezed to a 5-1 win at Washington in Class 2A Section 3.
The Leopards (5-0, 6-1) had a 3-0 halftime lead after Kovatch, Brandon Yeschenko and Logan Metzger scored. Kovatch scored both goals in the second half.
- Beth-Center had an eight-goal lead at halftime of a 10-1 non-section win over Geibel Catholic.
The Bulldogs’ Joey Rodriguez scored three goals and Wyatt Pash’s two were good enough for half of Beth-Center tallies. Parker Amos, Reiner King, Joseph Minucci, Ryder Roule and Alex George had one goal apiece.
Amos had four assists as the Bulldogs improved to 4-3.
- Southmoreland scored a goal in each half and defeated Waynesburg 2-0 in Class 2A Section 2 match.
- Austin Ulery scored the lone goal of the match during the first half and Mount Pleasant defeated McGuffey 1-0 in Class 2A Section 3.
Mount Pleasant is unbeaten in section at 5-0 and 5-1 overall. The Highlanders are 3-2, 5-3.
Girls soccer
Ali Winguard and Ava Capozzoli scored goals in the first half and Chartiers-Houston held on for a 2-1 victory over South Allegheny on Monday in Class A Section 2.
The lone goal for SA (2-1, 4-1) was from Abigail Allen with 5:21 left.
C-H goalkeeper Grace McAvoy made 11 saves as the Bucs improved to 3-1 in section and 6-1 overall.
- Ella Miller and Rylei Rastoka both scored two goals as Waynesburg defeated Beth-Center 5-1 Monday in Class A Section 2.
Lake Litnowich also scored for Waynesburg (2-2-0, 4-2-0). Miller assisted on three goals and Rastoka set up another.
- Atleigh Ciprich and Camryn Klein each scorted a goal, leading Peters Township to a 2-0 victory over visiting Norwin on Monday in Class 4A Section 2. Natalie Faingaert had an assist for Peters Township (3-0-1, 5-0-1) while Molly Kubistek recorded the shutout in net. Norwin is 1-3, 1-5.
In the NBA
Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.’s alleged attack on his girlfriend in a New York City hotel room left the woman with a fractured neck vertebra and a deep cut above her right eye, prosecutors revealed at his arraignment Tuesday.
Porter, 23, pleaded not guilty to felony assault and strangulation charges in connection with the incident Monday in Manhattan. The NBA player was released after posting bail, which was set at $75,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
In the NFL
Former NFL receiver Mike Williams, who was injured in a construction accident two weeks ago and later put on a ventilator, died Tuesday. He was 36.
Williams, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills from 2010-14, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
Williams was injured at a construction site in Hillsborough County and removed from life support Thursday, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The newspaper quoted the mother of Williams’ 8-year-old daughter as saying he was partially paralyzed in the accident.
