Girls soccer

Meredith Allender scored a tiebreaking goal in the second half and the Bearcats added an insurance tally to defeat Beth-Center, 3-1, in Class A Section 2 Wednesday night.

Allender’s goal broke a 1-1 tie. Emily Kisner and Alex Jackson also scored for the Bearcats (2-3-1, 4-4-1), who moved to the .500 mark overall.

Beth-Center slipped to 0-6, 1-7.

  • Waynesburg was a 4-0 winner over South Allegheny in Class A Section 2.

Ella Miller led the Raiders’ attack with two goals and an assist. Rylei Rastoka and Kaley Rohanna had the other goals and goalkeeper Peyton Cowell had the shutout as Waynesburg improved to 4-2 in section and 6-2 overall.

  • McKenna DeUnger and Bella Carroto each scored three goals as Charleroi rolled to an 8-2 victory over Moneswsen in Class A Section 2.

In the NFL

Kareem Hunt ran right back to the Cleveland Browns.

Desperate to find a quality running back after losing star Nick Chubb for the season, the Browns have reunited with Hunt, who was available as a free agent and is expected to be able to help Cleveland’s offense immediately.

The team is giving Hunt a one-year deal worth up to $4 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press. Hunt’s deal includes numerous incentives.

A Cleveland-area native, Hunt spent four seasons with the Browns before the team decided not to re-sign him this offseason.

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young did not participate in Wednesday’s walkthrough practice because of an ankle injury, opening the door for the possibility of veteran Andy Dalton starting on Sunday against the Seattle

  • Seahawks.

Panthers coach Frank Reich said at this point it’s too early to know if the No. 1 overall pick will be able to play.

  • The run-deficient Minnesota Vikings acquired running back Cam Akers in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams after the fourth-year player fell out of favor with the coaching staff and behind Kyren Williams on the depth chart.

The Vikings sent a 2026 conditional sixth-round draft pick to the Rams for Akers and a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick in the deal, which was pending Akers passing a physical.

In college football

Buddy Teevens, the successful and innovative Ivy League football coach who brought robotic tackling dummies to Dartmouth practices and strived to make the game safer, died Tuesday of injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident in March. He was 66.

  • LSU safety Greg Brooks has undergone surgery to remove “a large brain tumor,” his family announced.

“Doctors successfully performed the procedure Friday to remove the mass,” the family said in a social media post that was verified by LSU athletics spokesman Michael Bonnette. “We are awaiting biopsy results.”

Brooks abruptly left the team last week and missed the 12th-ranked Tigers’ 41-14 victory at Mississippi State.

In baseball

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander J.C. Mejía was suspended 162 games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday after his second positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

The 27-year-old tested positive for Stanozolol.

Mejía was suspended 80 games on May 17, 2022, after his first positive test for Stanozolol, a synthetic steroid derived from testosterone.

Mejía went 1-0 with a 5.56 ERA in nine appearances this season, striking out 13 and walking three in 11 1/3 innings.

• New York Yankees rookie center fielder Jasson Domínguez had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

The team said Domínguez’s anticipated recovery time is nine-to-10 months.

Signed for a $5.1 million bonus, the 20-year-old switch-hitter homered in his big league debut Sept. 1. He was hitting .258 with four homers and seven RBIs in eight games before a scan on Sept. 10 revealed the tear.

• Dominic Canzone homered and drove in four runs as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3 Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep and maintain their position in the tight AL West race.

Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh added back-to-back homers to give Seattle 200 home runs in a season for the seventh time in franchise history. Raleigh also doubled, giving him 52 extra-base hits, the most by a Mariners catcher in a season.

Seattle (84-68) kept pace with Texas (84-68) and division-leading Houston (85-68), which both won Wednesday. The Rangers and Mariners are also tied for the third and final AL wild card, one-half game behind Toronto, which played later Wednesday. Seattle heads to Texas for a three-game series starting Friday.
