1953 – Joe Marconi, a fullback from Fredericktown, scores on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter to lead West Virginia to a 17-7 victory over Pitt.
1961 – Roger Maris ties Babe Ruth’s 34-year-old record with his 60th homer, off Baltimore’s Jack Fisher.
1964 – Gary Pittman throws touchdown passes of 40 yards to Lou Kertesz and 30 yards to Al Casciola as Avella High School defeats visiting Mapletown 16-6 in a game between undefeated football teams.
1970 – Bob McLuckey catches a 37-yard touchdown pass from Don Kasperik in the with 3:06 remaining to give Washington & Jefferson a 28-21 victory over Carnegie Mellon. Kasperik passed for two scores and ran for another.
1971 – New York’s Tom Seaver throws a one-hitter and strikes out 10 in the Mets’ 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium. Vic Davalillo singles in the seventh inning to break up the no-hitter.
1975 – Mike Wasieleski’s conversion run is the difference as undefeated Peters Township edges Bellevue, 14-12, in a Black Hills Conference game.
1980 – A six-yard touchdown run by Doug Brown late in the first half gave Washington the lead and Don Cameron secured the win by intercepting two passes in the final four minutes as as the Little Prexies edged Waynesburg, 6-0.
1981 – Defensive back Jan Jesso sets a school single-game record by intercepting four passes – returning one 16 yards for a touchdown – to lead Waynesburg College to a 35-14 victory over visiting Canisius.
1986 – Richard Bryant throws a halfback pass to Rod Iams for a nine-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining, and Jason Luzier passes to Jack Fleissner for a two-point conversion, as Washington rallies for a 14-14 tie with McGuffey.
1986 – With undefeated Burgettstown (5-0) leading 32-0 and 1:28 left in the first half, the Blue Devils’ game against Fairchance-Georges in stopped and the Blue Devils declared the winners. After two F-G linemen suffer neck injuries, Runners athletic director Dan Andria consults with game officials and requests that the game be called. The officials grant Andria’s request.
1997 – Washington overcomes a 16-point deficit in the closing minutes to defeat Quaker Valley, the No. 3-ranked team in Class AA, 35-28, at Wash High Stadium. The Prexies score three touchdowns in the final 1:51, including Sean Thomas’ game-winning one-yard plunge with two seconds left.
2000 – American Rulon Gardner denies Russian Alexander Karelin a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal and ends his 15-year winning streak in international competition with a 1-0 upset in the 286-pound Greco-Roman wrestling final at the Sydney Games.
2013 – Jordan West rushes for 114 yards and three touchdowns, Wash High’s line mauls Jeannette’s defensive front and Prexies roll to 48-14 win.
