Catholics gathered Wednesday to observe the start of Lent and receive ashes on their foreheads in the sign of the cross. More than 200 people attended the noontime ash distribution Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in downtown Washington, where the popular fish fry lunch was available afterward. The Rev. Edward Yuhas led the noontime Mass and called on those present to pray, fast and give alms – especially in the form of their time – during this Lenten season.
